Terms of use

These are the rules for using Know Ball? By playing, you accept them. They are written to be read.

The short version

Play the games, share your results, enjoy yourself. Don't scrape the site, don't try to pull the answers out of it, and don't republish the puzzles as your own. We run this as well as we can but we don't promise it will always be up, and yesterday 's puzzles may not stay online forever.

Who we are

Know Ball? is run by Nathan Stowe-Morgans.

Playing

You do not need an account. If you make one, keep your sign-in to yourself — anything done with it counts as done by you. You may play on as many devices as you like, but one person's streak is meant to be one person's.

Please don't automate play, use scripts or extensions to extract answers, hammer the endpoints, or otherwise try to get at the puzzle data behind the game. The teammate graph, the answer lists and the ranked fields are ours and they stay on our servers. We may block or reset accounts and devices doing any of that, and we may void scores obtained that way.

The archive

Some games keep an archive of past puzzles you can replay. Two things about it are worth being clear on, because they are the ones that catch people out:

  • Archive play is not scored. Only the day's puzzle, played on its day, counts towards your record or your streak. Replaying an old one is for the pleasure of it.
  • The archive is a courtesy, not a guarantee. We may correct, replace or remove a past puzzle at any time — most often because the football data behind it turned out to be wrong, which is the whole reason a correction route exists. We don't promise any particular puzzle will still be there tomorrow, and we may limit how far back the archive goes.

A puzzle that is corrected after you played it does not change the result you already recorded. Your score on the day stands.

The puzzles and the data

The puzzles, their wording, the artwork and the software are ours. The football data underneath is not: it is derived from Wikipedia and Wikidata and is used under CC BY-SA 4.0. The data page names the sources and explains what the gaps mean.

Share your results freely — the share cards exist to be shared, and that includes on any platform you like. What we ask you not to do is republish whole puzzles, bulk-copy the archive, or present the games as yours.

When a puzzle is wrong

Sometimes it will be. Football data has genuine gaps and genuine errors, and a game built on it inherits them. If an answer you know is right was refused, tell us the game, the date and the name you typed. Where we can, we correct the puzzle and the underlying data; where the correction lands after the day is over, we say so rather than quietly rewriting history.

What we don't promise

The site is provided as it is. We don't guarantee it will be available without interruption, that every fact in it is correct, or that it will keep working on every device forever. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from using it — but nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.

Changes, and the law that applies

We may update these terms. The date at the top says when they last changed, and continuing to play after that means accepting the new version. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
